Air Canada

Carry-On Pet Policy:

Air Canada allows small cats and dogs (maximum 10 kg / 22 lbs combined weight for the pet and carrier) to travel with their owners in the passenger cabin of Air Canada and Jazz flights. The cost is $50 to $100 per flight based on itinerary on flights to Canada or between Canada and the U.S. The airline permits only 2 to 4 pets in the cabin per flight, so you should make reservations for your pets as soon as possible after you have confirmed your own travel plans. Passengers traveling with pets should check-in for their flight at least 30 minutes earlier than the normal recommended check-in time.

Checked Baggage/Cargo Policy:

Pets are permitted to travel on the same flight as their owners in the baggage compartment of Air Canada’s aircraft only. The fee for travel within Canada and the United States is $105 each way, excluding taxes. The fee for international travel is $270 each way. Air Canada has a blackout period from June 20 to September 10 and December 15 to January 12. During these periods, pets may not travel as checked baggage on Air Canada flights. Please note that temperature controlled and ventilated baggage compartments are available only on certain aircraft, and Air Canada reserves the right to restrict pet travel during times when weather may not permit safe travel for your pets. If you are traveling during periods of extreme weather, please refer to Air Canada’s website for further restrictions on pet travel due to weather conditions.

Carrier Guidelines:

Pets traveling in the passenger cabin must remain in a leak-proof and well ventilated soft- or hard-sided carrier measuring no greater than 23 cm x 40 cm x 55 cm (9″ x 15.5″ x 21.5″). For the safety and comfort of the pet, the pet must be able to comfortably sit up and turn around. No part of the pet may extend outside the kennel. The pet must remain in the kennel and the kennel must remain under the seat and closed at all times. The carrier will count as the one standard carry-on item which you are allowed to bring on board. For pets traveling as checked baggage, only hard-sided kennels are accepted. No part of your pet is allowed to protrude from the carrier. Wire carriers are not permitted. All carriers must be secure and leak-proof. Collapsible kennels are not accepted. The pet carrier must be big enough to allow your pet to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably. If the pet carrier does not allow the animal to do this, Air Canada will refuse transport. Any wheels must be removed from pet carriers prior to check-in. Pets over 31 pounds (14 kg) must have their own separate kennel. A maximum of two dogs not weighing more than 31 pounds (14 kg) each may travel together in the same kennel.

Pet Reservations:

Air Canada requires that you pre-register your pet for travel on the same flight as yours by contacting Air Canada Reservations within 24 hours of booking travel. Simply call Air Canada Reservations at 1-888-247-2262 and let the agent know that you are traveling with your pet. Pets that have not been pre-registered with Air Canada Reservations will not be accepted at the airport. Dimensions of the kennel and weight and breed of your pet must be given at the time of your call to Air Canada Reservations. A pet and kennel with a combined weight of less than 70 pounds (32.5 kg) is accepted for travel in the baggage compartment provided the owner is flying on the same flight. A passenger may not travel with more than two animals. Two pets travelling in one kennel are counted as two pets regardless of combined weight. The number of animals accepted is limited by aircraft type and may require the modification of your reservation to allow Air Canada to accommodate your pet.
