Lufthansa will transport your animals in the cabin or cargo of the plane depending on their size and weight. For some breeds of dogs, special transport regulations may apply. The airline also suggests that the passengers be aware of import and export by-laws when transporting pets to other countries.
Carry-On Pet Policy:
A dog or cat may be transported in the cabin in your own carrier box (maximum dimensions: 55 x 40 x 23 cm, watertight, bite proof). Maximum weight of animal + carrier is 8 kg. An additional fee is applied for your pet: within Germany – 35 EUR, 50 USD/CAD; within Europe and third countries – 50 EUR, 70 USD/CAD; intercontinental – 70 EUR, 100 USD/CAD.
Checked Baggage/Cargo Policy:
Animals that cannot be transported inside the cabin will be transported by Lufthansa in appropriate, animal-friendly containers in an air-conditioned area of the cargo hold. You must provide your own container for your animal. Medium sized container may be no more than 80 x 55 x 55 cm and fees vary by destination: within Germany – 70 EUR, 100 USD/CAD; within Europe and third countries – 100 EUR, 150 USD/CAD; intercontinental – 150 EUR, 200 USD/CAD. Large sized carriers may be no more than 125 x 75 x 85 cm and fees vary by destination: within Germany – 150 EUR, 200 USD/CAD; within Europe and third countries – 200 EUR, 300 USD/CAD; intercontinental – 300 EUR, 400 USD/CAD.
For pets traveling in the cabin, carriers may be a maximum of 55 x 40 x 23 cm and must be watertight and bite proof. Maximum weight of animal + carrier is 8 kg. For pets traveling in the cargo hold, carriers may be no larger than than 125 x 75 x 85
